Australian Josh Hooper will attempt to avenge a humiliating defeat in last year's annual university boat race on the Thames when he rows for Cambridge again next month.

Hooper, a 26-year-old Land Economy student from Melbourne, has retained his spot as Cambridge's No.7 and is the sole Australian involved in the 161st running of the famed race.

Hooper was part of the team that lost to Oxford last year by 11 lengths, the biggest losing margin since 1973.

He will be up against two trans-Tasman rivals in Oxford's New Zealand brothers Sam and James O'Connor.

Sam, 27, is chasing a third straight victory in the event while 24-year-old James has been selected for the first time.

Cambridge will again take a weight advantage into the 6.8km race, tipping the scales at a combined 727.8kg, 42kg heavier than Oxford's crew.

This year's race will be held on April 11, with thousands of spectators expected to line the banks of the River Thames in London.

Cambridge lead 81-78 in the series that began in 1829.
