Mat Ryan and Genk held firm to progress to the Europa League quarter-finals with a 1-1 draw with Belgium rivals Gent, qualifying 6-3 on aggregate.

Heading into the home tie with a 5-2 advantage, Ryan's teammate Timothy Castagne drilled home the opening goal after 20 minutes to stretch their lead on Thursday (Friday AEDT).

Despite the pressure on Gent to force the issue, they gave Socceroos goalkeeper Ryan little trouble before Louis Verstraete scored a late consolation equaliser.

A Ryan-inspired Genk had done the hard yards in the first-leg clash a week ago when the Australian saved a penalty in the three-goal victory.

Elsewhere, 10-man Besiktas beat Olympiacos 4-1 at home, to seal a 5-2 aggregate success.

The Turkish side took an early lead when Vincent Aboubakar headed home from a corner on 10 minutes before ex-Liverpool forward Ryan Babel steered home from the edge of the box in the 22nd minute.

Tarik Elyounoussi's deflected scissor-kick put the visiting Greeks back into the game.

Besiktas goal scorer Aboubakar was sent off on 39 minutes for a headbutt but Olympiacos couldn't take advantage.

Babel grabbed his second of the night on 75 minutes and substitute Cenk Tosun put the icing on the cake on 84 minutes.

Meanwhile, Celta Vigo also eased into the final eight with a 2-0 win over Krasnodar in Russia on, progressing 4-1 on aggregate.

After a 2-1 victory at home, Hugo Mallo opened the second-leg scoring in the 52nd minute when he blasted home a loose ball before Iago Aspas doubled the Galician's lead with a neat lob after good interplay with John Guidetti.

Charles Kabore was sent off for two yellow cards to complete a miserable night for hosts Krasnodar.

The day's late Europa League round of 16 matches (first leg results in brackets): Roma v Lyon (2-4), Borussia Monchengladbach v Schalke 04 (1-1), Anderlecht v Apoel (1-0), Ajax v Copenhagen (1-2) and Manchester United v FK Rostov (1-1).
