Aussie sculler Grant still in hunt for Rio

Australian sculler Rhys Grant and lightweight women's double Hannah Every-Hall and Georgia Nesbitt are tracking for Rio at the final qualification regatta.

Australian rower Rhys Grant is still in the hunt for a berth at the Rio Olympics after advancing through the early stages of the final qualification regatta in Switzerland.

The West Australian single sculler must place in the top three in the Lucerne regatta to secure a place on the start line in Rio.

Grant finished fifth in his first hit-out forcing him into the repechage rounds.

In that race he needed a top-three finish and after holding the lead early, was overtaken by entries from Russia and Germany but still did enough to advance to the semi-finals, which will be held Monday afternoon local time.

In the lightweight women's double sculls, Australians Hannah Every-Hall and Georgia Nesbitt finished third in their heat and will also contest their repechage race on Monday with the top four heading into Tuesday's final.

Australia are also trying to get their big boats to Rio with the men's and women's crews contesting the "Regatta of Death".

The eights must finish top two in their finals to qualify.

Those crews raced for lanes on Sunday, with the first across the line securing the middle lane for Tuesday's final.

In the women's race the Australians finished third behind Romania and the Netherlands.

The Australian men got a fast start and led at the halfway mark until the United States surged to claim victory.

Italy were 1.27 seconds ahead of Australia who came in third.
