Aussie Sharks crush South Africa 17-1

The Aussie Sharks will face a quarter-final clash with Greece at the world water polo championships in Russia after a 17-1 thrashing of South Africa.

The Australian men's water polo side has dealt a 17-1 thumping to South Africa to progress to the last eight at the world championships in Russia.

The Aussie Sharks were ruthless in defence and capitalised on their superior pace for the 5-1, 6-0, 2-0, 4-0 victory in Kazan on Sunday night.

Aaron Younger took top honours on the scoreboard with four goals, while AJ Roach and Mitch Emery each fired in three.

Tyler Martin and Jarrod Gilchrist each shot a pair, while one apiece from George Ford, Joel Swift and Richie Campbell rounded out the Australian scoreline.

Assistant coach Paul Oberman praised the mature display by his side, noting the team-wide contributions.

"It was an excellent first half, really good composure, good intensity and while we dropped a little in the middle stages we picked it up at the end and it was good to finish that way," Oberman said.

"Tonight showed the depth of the squad and it showed that they are all ready to play and all ready to play international water polo.

"It shows whether you're No.1, No.2 or No.13, everyone plays and everyone has a role and contribution to make."

The win followed an easy victory over Japan, a draw with Montenegro and a narrow loss to world No.1 Serbia in the group stage.

They now face Greece in Tuesday's quarterfinal for a place in the semis - a stage Australia have not reached at a world championship since hosting the event in Perth in 1998.
