Australia's men's water polo team have survived another third quarter collapse to defeat the USA 10-9 at the FINA World League Super Finals in Italy.
The Aussie Sharks bounced back from their opening-game loss to Italy, in which they squandered a 3-1 halftime lead, to get their campaign back on track - even if Wednesday's match had its nervous moments.
Australia must have feared history was repeating when the USA went on a run in the third quarter, much like Italy did by scoring five unanswered goals on Tuesday.
After holding a 4-1 halftime lead, Australia let it slip away and took only a one-goal advantage into the final quarter.
But aided by a strong fourth quarter to Aaron Young, who scored five goals including a superb individual spin and shoot manoeuvre, secured the win for Australia, who next face two-time defending World League Super Finals champions Serbia in their final group match on Thursday.
The World League Super Finals are 2015's main prelude to the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia that begin next month, while the winner of this tournament will earn automatic qualification for next year's Rio Olympic Games.
