Aussie showjumpers book Rio spot

Australia's showjumping team has qualified for the Rio Olympics, joining the eventing and dressage squads in Brazil.

Australia's showjumping team has booked a place at the Rio Olympics by finishing second at the equestrian regional qualifier in Hagen, Germany.

The jumping team will be joined by Australia's eventing and dressage teams, who have already secured their place in Rio.

The 2016 Games will be the third consecutive Olympics Australia have qualified full teams across all three equestrian disciplines.

Dual Olympian and showjumping captain Edwina Tops-Alexander led her team strongly with Julia Hargreaves, Scott Keach and Jamie Kermond putting in solid performances as Australia finished behind Japan.

"Sure we would have liked to have won, we're all very competitive, but in general the horses jumped really well and we were happy with that," Tops-Alexander said.

"We had great team spirit which helped us to get the job done. The goal was achieved and now we're focused on building a strong team for the Rio Olympics."

With less than one year to go until Rio, the focus for athletes will turn to individual preparations of their horses ahead of team selection next year.
