Aussie sport bonanza falls flat

It wasn't the super Saturday of sport that Australia was hoping for, with disappointment across several sports.

HOW A HUGE DAY OF SPORT FOR AUSTRALIA ACROSS THE GLOBE CAME APART AT THE SEAMS.

SOCCER

Australia lost their World Cup Group C opener against France 2-1, with Les Bleus' first goal coming from a penalty contentiously awarded via the video assistant referee system. Just before the hour mark, Antoine Griezmann was ruled to have been fouled by Joshua Risdon in the box after the referee watched a replay of the incident at the side of the pitch. The Atletico Madrid forward then fired the spot-kick past Mathew Ryan.

RUGBY UNION

Ireland beat Australia 26-21 in Melbourne, levelling the three-Test series at 1-1. The Irish secured their first away win in Australia in 39 years after Johnny Sexton contributed a 16-point haul. The winner-takes-all finale to the series is in Sydney next week.

CRICKET

Australia went 2-0 down with three matches left to play in their ODI series against England following a 38-run loss at Cardiff. Batting first, the hosts posted 8-342. Australia lost early wickets but Shaun Marsh's 131 gave them a chance before they were subsequently dismissed for 304 in 47.1 overs.

GOLF

Leading the Australian tilt at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, Marc Leishman was climbing up the leaderboard through seven holes before a triple-bogey started a freefall. The world No.14 shot an eight-over-par 78 to plummet to 11 over the card, eight shots back of a four-way tie for the lead.

TENNIS

France beat Australia on the tennis court as well as the soccer field, with Matt Ebden and Bernard Tomic being denied an all-Australian final at the ATP event in the Netherlands by Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Jeremy Chardy. Second seed Gasquet ended Tomic's recent resurgence in the semi-finals by winning 6-4 6-7 (7-6) 6-2 while Chardy beat Ebden 6-4 7-5.
