The Australian women's water polo team has reached the second round of the world championships despite completing the group stage with an 11-8 loss to Greece.

The Stingers were undefeated leading into Thursday's match after beating Kazakhstan and Russia earlier this week in Hungary.

The sides were level at 5-5 at halftime before Australia faded in the final two quarters as Greece, ranked 10th in the world, gained their three-goal buffer.

Keesja Gofers scored three goals in her 150th game for Australia.

"I think that we weren't good enough, especially in our defence," Stingers coach Sakis Kechagias said.

"Every day here is different, though some days are better than the others, so we are just going to move on, and give our best from now on."

World No.4 Australia finished second in the group behind Greece, who automatically progress to the semi-finals.

Australia will contest an elimination second-round match against France on Saturday.
