Aussie striker McDonald joins Millwall

After stints at Celtic and Middlesbrough, Socceroos striker Scott McDonald has signed for English Championship club Millwall.

Socceroos striker Scott McDonald has signed for Championship club Millwall on a free transfer after Middlesbrough agreed to pay up the final year of his contract.

McDonald has a two-year deal with the south London club, who reached the FA Cup semi-finals last season.

The 29-year-old scored 13 times for Middlesbrough in the English second tier last season, but the Teeside officials were keen to reduce the coast of his reported STG30,000 ($A50,000) -a-week salary.

Millwall manager Steve Lomas moved quickly to land the former Celtic star and McDonald, who hit the winner for the Glasgow club in a Champions League tie against AC Milan in 2007, admitted he feels revitalised by the move.

"It has been well documented that Middlesbrough wanted to move in a different direction. I worked really hard and was successful again last season but finances play a big part in football and they wanted to downsize," McDonald said.

"As a player, you can only do as much as you can with the contract you've been given until someone else wants to get you. Millwall showed a real hunger and desire to sign me."
