Former world champion Joel Parkinson was one of four Australians to win their second round heats in the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles, California.

The 34-year-old recorded the highest score on the second day of competition, 18.74, to overcome American CJ Hobgood and progress to the third round.

Josh Kerr, Matt Wilkinson and Bede Durbidge also triumphed in their elimination battles to gain third-round berths.

They join fellow Australians Mick Fanning, who is chasing a fourth world title, Owen Wright, currently third in the standings behind Fanning and leader Adriano De Souza, Taj Burrow, Kai Otton, Adrian Buchan and Julian Wilson in the third round after their first-round success.

In other second round action, reigning world champion Gabriel Medina, currently 10th in the standings, easily accounted for compatriot Tomas Hermes, and fourth-ranked Filipe Toledo narrowly defeated American Ian Crane.

Australian Adam Melling will meet American Keanu Asing when the final two heats of round two are completed on day three.

In the women's event, Australians Dimity Stoyle, Tyler Wright and Nikki Van Dijk all advanced.

Van Dijk will now meet world leader Courtney Conlogue, who is shooting for her third tour victory this year, and Tatiana Weston-Webb in the third round.

Wright will meet Americans Carissa Moore, who sits second in the standings, and Alessa Quinzon in her round three contest.

Stoyle comes up against fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons, third in the standings, and Frenchwoman Johanne Defay in the third round.
