Companies will be able to bid for taxpayer dollars to recover food waste as part of the federal government's carbon emissions reduction plan.

Under the direct action policy, entities will bid under prescribed methods such as landfill gas collection for a slice of a $2.55 billion fund.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt has announced plans to draft a new method to encourage food waste recovery, telling an Ozharvest event in Canberra it will allow both the reduction of waste and emissions.
