Australian Jordan Thompson has bowed out of the Delray Beach Open, beaten in a second-round duel with Italian veteran Andreas Seppi.

World No.68 Thompson forced a deciding set after losing the opener before sixth seed Seppi broke twice in the last to prevail 6-3 4-6 6-1 in an hour and 46 minutes.

Second-seeded John Isner advanced to the third round, beating Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-4 6-3.

The 2.08m American set up a match against eighth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France, a 6-2 7-6 (3) winner over Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the outdoor hardcourt event.

"It was a good win. I think I'm getting more comfortable on this surface, especially with the positioning on my return," Isner said.

"I was challenging him on a lot of return games. I was very happy how I came through that."

England's Dan Evans followed his opening victory over third-seeded defending champion Frances Tiafoe with a 6-0 6-2 win over Lloyd Harris of South Africa and will now face Seppi.

Top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, playing his first event after missing four months because of a right knee injury, will play American Reilly Opelka on Thursday night.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios is scheduled to play Radu Albot on Friday morning (AEDT) for a spot in the quarter-finals.
