Aussie triathlete Backhouse wins in China

Young Australian triathlete Gillian Backhouse has won the ITU World Cup race at Chengdu in China for the biggest victory of her short career.

Australian triathlete Gillian Backhouse claimed the biggest win of her career on Saturday with victory in the ITU World Cup event in China.

Backhouse overcame warm and muggy conditions to win the race by 29 seconds from American Jessica Broderick and Belgium's Claire Michel.

The Queenslander kicked clear in the run leg and never looked back for her best finish at World Cup level.

"In terms of career performances, this is the absolute best for me by a mile," Backhouse said.

"My previous best at an ITU World Cup was 15th. It is not a complete surprise though. Training has been going really well over the past month. My coach and I were hoping for a top five but to win is just absolutely amazing."

Backhouse will return to training following her heroics in Chengdu but has big plans for later in the season.

"I am back to a block of training and then a crack at the U23 duathlon championships and hopefully a couple of WTS (world triathlon series) starts in the not too distant future," she said.
