Aussie volunteers flown to Vanuatu capital

The Australian government is still trying to track down between 30-40 Australian and Canadian citizens in cyclone-torn Vanuatu.

The Australian government is flying another group of stranded volunteers from outer islands to Vanuatu's capital after Cyclone Pam.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says 11 volunteers will arrive in Port Vila on a chartered Air Vanuatu flight on Friday afternoon.

A spokesman says another two or three will be flown in on King Air aircraft later in day, before the final two arrive by helicopter.

The volunteers had been stranded on the remote islands of Pentecost and Ambae since the destructive category five storm on Friday.

DFAT is still trying to track down another 30-40 Australian and Canadian citizens in Vanuatu.

The spokesman said many had likely already been flown home by the RAAF or changed their return flights.

"We just need to check all the flight manifests. We expect the number to come down quite significantly. It already has in the last 24 hours," he told AAP.

The government has made contact with almost 3000 Australian citizens in the archipelago over the past week.

The Australian navy's heavy landing ship Tobruk is due to arrive to help the recovery effort on Monday.

The DFAT spokesman said the government was considering bringing in some Black Hawk helicopters to assist as well.

The Australian government had also seen a newspaper report that Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office was holding up vital aid in Port Vila.

"We're aware of that report and we'll do whatever we can to assist Vanuatu's government get the aid out," the spokesman added.
