Aussie women beat Brazil at water polo cup

Australia won their second successive game at the 2014 FINA World League Intercontinental Cup, proving too strong for Brazil.

The Australian women's water polo team beat a plucky Brazilian side 9-6 on Wednesday in their second game of the 2014 FINA World League Intercontinental Cup in California.

After her outstanding performance in Australia's win against China in the opening game, dual Olympic bronze medallist Gemma Beadsworth was again at her damaging best, scoring another four goals for the Aussie Stingers.

Youngster Maddy Steere was among the other scorers, with her bounce shot late in the third quarter handing Australia a two-goal buffer. Additional goals came from Isobel Bishop, Ash Southern, Keesja Gofers and Stingers captain Rowie Webster.

The Stingers led 2-1 at the first break, before Brazil struck back with two goals in the second quarter.

Despite conceding a goal early in the third stanza, the Stingers replied with three unanswered goals to lead at the final change, with a further three goals in the fourth period enough to put the win beyond doubt.

Australian sharp-shooter Beadsworth said the team didn't perform as well as they had hoped, despite an increasingly challenging opponent.

"You can't underestimate a team like Brazil," Beadsworth said.

"They will be training hard with the Olympics in 2016 and they have a lot of experienced players. But, probably, we didn't play our best game today."

The Stingers' next match is scheduled for 8am (AEST) on Friday against a winless Venezuela.
