Aussie women into water polo cup semis

The Aussie Stingers have won through to the semi-finals of the World League Intercontinental Cup women's water polo in California.

The Australian women's water polo team on Friday moved into the semi-finals of the 2014 FINA World League Intercontinental Cup in California.

The Aussie Stingers beat a resurgent Kazakhstan 12-6 in their fourth game of the tournament to set up a re-match against China on Sunday morning (AEST) in the last-four showdown.

Following her late addition to the team, Bronte Colenso had a strong showing against Kazakhstan, scoring a goal while earning crucial penalty opportunities for teammates Eliesha Browne and captain Rowie Webster to convert into points.

Dual Olympic bronze medallist Gemma Beadsworth continued her form with another three goals, while World Championships silver medallist Jayde Appel was tight in attack from centre forward.

The Stingers led 3-1 at the first break, extending the lead to 7-1 at halftime. Kazakhstan staged a comeback in the third and fourth quarters, however a dominant opening three stanzas by Australia allowed them to keep the lead and earn the victory.

Stingers captain Rowie Webster said she was happy with the win, despite her side allowing Kazakhstan to close the gap late in the game.

"We had a good start and controlled them quite well, we had good passes and drives and got the ball into centre with everyone contributing," Webster said. "Although, we were a little undisciplined in the final quarter to allow Kazakhstan back in."

The win also secures the Stingers a starting berth at the World League Finals in June at Shanghai in China.
