Aussie women's Sevens below-par in Atlanta

Australia's women's rugby Sevens team have been upset by the United States in Atlanta but bounced back to win the Plate competition.

Australia's women's rugby Sevens team have suffered a hitch in their quest to automatically qualify for the Rio Olympics.

Australia were upset by the United States in their Cup quarter-final on Sunday in Atlanta in the third leg of the six-event World Rugby series.

Beaten finalists in Dubai and Sao Paulo, Australia went on to beat France in the final of the Plate competition, but squandered points to now share second place with Canada on 48 points in the series standings behind New Zealand (60).

This season's series doubles as an Olympic qualifier, with the top four nations getting automatic berths in Rio next year.

France sit in fourth spot on 38 points followed on 36 by the US, who were the surprise packets at home in Atlanta.

The US won through to the Cup final, where they were crushed by the Kiwis 50-12.

A dazzling five-try haul from Portia Woodman ensured a rampant New Zealand maintained their 100 per cent record in the series.

The 23-year-old crossed four times before the break as New Zealand raced to a 24-0 lead at the interval.

Honey Hireme grabbed a brace and captain Sarah Goss also crossed while the US earned consolation efforts via Bui Baravilala and Hannah Lopez.

Canada missed a sideline conversion to lose 24-22 their semi-final against New Zealand.

The series moves to Canada for the fourth leg from April 18-19.
