Aussies beach volleyballers fight for Rio

Australia's Olympic beach volleyball hopefuls will attempt to secure Asia's last remaining tickets to Rio this weekend in Cairns.

Revenge may be the only route to a debut Olympics for Australian beach volleyball duo Nikki Laird and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar.

The under-23 world champions will put everything on the line this weekend in Cairns, where they'll battle Asia's best for a single remaining women's team ticket to Rio.

Laird and Artacho are a strong chance of winning the Asian Continental Olympic qualifiers and getting on the plane.

But China's Xue Chen and Xia Xinyi will be hard to beat.

Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Xue and her young partner Xia defeated Laird and Artacho in straight sets in the Asian Championships final on Sydney's Manly Beach earlier this year.

Another tough prospect is Vanuatu pairing Linline Matauatu and Miller Pata, who only narrowly missed automatic qualification for Rio via the world rankings.

Laird and Artacho will likely take Australia's top women's seed, while Australia's three-time Asian champions Chris McHugh and Isaac Kapa are set to be seeded first in the men's competition seeking the one men's team spot available.

Challenging McHugh and Kapa will be dangerous Qatar's duo Jefferson Santos Pereira and Cherif Younousse, while Kazakhstan's Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko boast solid world tour results.

Australia has already qualified one beach volleyball team for Rio, after Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy secured the seventh seed via the Olympic rankings this month.
