Aussies can't tune out the TV

Australians are watching around three hours of television at home each day according to a new report.

Australians just can't switch off their televisions.

They're drawn to the alluring light for an average of three hours at home each day.

While this number has dropped by a few minutes a day since the first quarter of 2014, Australians are still tuning in for an average of 89 and a half hours of broadcast TV every month.

And often, one screen is not enough.

One in four Australians use an internet-connected device while turning on the telly each day, while a third of people have two devices operating alongside their TV, according to the Australian Multi-Screen Report co-authored by Regional Tam, OzTam and Neilsen.

OzTAM chief executive Doug Peiffer said Australians are slowly shifting away from "traditional" television with many being more selective in their viewing habits.

"We continue to see Australians spend a little less time at the `full buffet' of live linear television and a little more time viewing `a la carte', watching their favourite TV shows when they want," Mr Peiffer said.

Local online streaming providers Presto and Stan, both launched in January, and overseas import Netflix, launched in March, were not included in the report.

All up, Australians spend just over 100 hours a month watching broadcast TV on a combination of TVs, laptops, smartphones and tablets.

TECHNOLOGY IN AUSTRALIAN HOMES:

Television - 96 pct

Internet - 80 pct

Smartphone - 77 pct

Tablet - 47 pct

Smart TV - 30 pct
