Aussies claim Pan Pacs 10km silver, bronze

Australia's Kareena Lee has claimed silver and teammate Nick Sloman bronze in the Pan Pacs 10km open water swimming.

Australia have capped their Pan Pacs campaign with another two medals after Kareena Lee claimed silver and debutant Nick Sloman bronze in the 10km open water race in Japan.

Lee, 24, backed up from the four-day Pan Pacs pool session that ended on Sunday to produce her best international result.

She finished just over a second behind Olympic silver medallist Haley Anderson of the United States at Hojo Beach, Tateyama.

In the men's 10km, Sloman, 20, led a frantic finish for bronze after American former world champion Jordan Wilimovsky claimed gold and Canada's Eric Hedlin silver.

Australia finished the Pan Pacs with an overall medal tally of eight gold, 13 silver and eight bronze - well behind the 20 gold of the world No.1 US after they swept the 10km event on Tuesday.

Lee was the sole Dolphins team member to back up in the 10km from the pool session where she narrowly missed out on 1500m freestyle bronze.

She showed no sign of fatigue, taking the lead in the 16-strong field on the third of the five-lap race with Australian teammate Chelsea Gubecka sitting in third.

Brazil's Ana Marcela Cunha tried to make a break on the fourth lap, at one stage holding a lead of almost three seconds, before Anderson powered home to defend her Pan Pacs title.

The 26-year-old Anderson won in 2hr 8min 24.8sec

Cunha claimed bronze with Rio Olympian Gubecka seventh.

Lee now looked forward to a well-earned rest after getting within touching distance of two-time 5km world champion Anderson.

"It's awesome to be able to get that close to her," Lee said.

"It means a lot, it's my first major international medal."

In the men's 10km, Wilimovsky backed up from the pool to win his third Pan Pacs medal in Japan.

The American - who had earlier won 1500m freestyle gold and 800m freestyle silver - came over the top of early leaders Taylor Abbott and Canada's Eric Hedlin before Sloman nabbed a medal in a frantic finish.

Just 0.6 of a second separated third and eighth in the 14-strong field.

Wilimovsky - the 2015 world champion and 2017 runner-up - claimed gold in 1:58:50.5.
