Aussies down Kazakhstan at water polo cup

The Australian men's water polo team have continued their good form at the FINA World League Intercontinental Cup with a win over Kazakhstan.

Teenager Lachlan Edwards has impressed in his second match for the Australian men's water polo team, scoring twice to help the side to an 11-7 win over Kazakhstan at the 2014 FINA World League Intercontinental Cup in China.

After taking an 11-10 victory over Canada in their opening match on Tuesday, the Aussie Sharks continued their good form in Wednesday's game.

The Sharks took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, extending their margin to 7-3 at the main break.

Australia's defence improved in the third term, with Kazakhstan was contained to one goal, and the early lead ensuring the Sharks the win.

While experience was clearly a key asset in the match, with stalwarts Tyler Martin and Aidan Roach each scoring three times, 19-year-old Edwards also earnt praise for his two-goal effort.

Captain Richie Campbell said he was pleased with the effort of the new members of the team, crediting an improved defence with the win.

"Our ability to play good defence generated our opportunities in attack, and once again it was good to see the new members stepping up and converting their goal-scoring opportunities," Campbell said.

The Sharks next play Japan at 9pm (AEST) on Thursday.
