Aussies face last-ditch FedEx Cup PGA tilt

There's a lot on the line for several Australians at the US PGA Tour's regular season-ending Wyndham Championship this week.

While former US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy has his US PGA Tour future locked up, a host of fellow Australians face a last-chance saloon at the season-ending Wyndham Championship.

Sitting at 125th on the FedEx Cup points race, the 40-year-old Ogilvy is assured of at least conditional status next season after using his one-time career money list exemption this year.

But with the top-125 players progressing to the $US35 million ($A45 million) FedEx playoffs series starting next week, 2006 US Open winner Ogilvy has set his sights on a strong finish at the final event of the regular season in Greensboro, North Carolina.

"Worst case scenario; finishing 126th or 127th is usually good for 13 or 14 events next year, as well as a few (sponsor's) invites I can probably get. I'll likely have a reasonable (2018) schedule," Ogilvy told AAP.

"But I'm not trying to finish 125th; the goal is to get as far up as I can and make it to at least (the second playoffs event in Boston, where I've played well.

"You never know what could happen after that."

But several of Ogilvy's countrymen face last-ditch efforts, notably Victorian teenager Ryan Ruffels.

The 19-year-old needs at least 48 FedEx points from the Wyndham Championship to have a chance at finishing inside the top-200 which qualify for second Web.com Tour finals.

A top-15 result at Greensboro would likely be enough for Ruffels, who missed out on the top-200 by a single point last year.

"Every shot out here is important; if I can have a big week here I can sneak my way into Web finals," Ruffels said.

"To even get myself in this position from six events this year, at my age, I'm quite proud of that."

Matt Jones and Steven Bowditch are also in a precarious situation.

At 149th on the standings, Sydney native Jones could play his way into the top-125 with a strong showing or fall out of the top-150 and lose conditional status for 2018 with a bad result.

But Jones is at least assured of Web.com finals, where he can win his way back to the main circuit.

After making just one cut from 26 events, two-time winner on Tour Bowditch (237th) requires at least outright ninth to have a chance at clawing back inside the top-200 to avoid losing status on the top tier next year.

But as a former fully exempt Tour member, he will still have a complete Web.com card.
