Australian tourists who may be in the search area for the men responsible for the deadly Paris terror attack need to remain vigilant, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

French authorities are intensifying the manhunt in the Picardy area, northeast of Paris, for two brothers suspected of massacring 12 people at the satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo, known for publishing controversial images.

Ms Bishop says there are many Australian war graves from World War I in the region, so it could be an area on tourists' itineraries.

She says Australia's ambassador to France, Stephen Brady, has laid a floral tribute at the Charlie Hebdo offices, where the attack occurred, on behalf of the Australian people.

"He described the overwhelming feeling in France as a feeling of unity, of the country together in solidarity," Ms Bishop told the Seven Network on Friday.

She says the message coming out of France is that French people stand united in their condemnation of this type of attack.

"We can't be complacent about an attack in Australia but we must not be intimidated," Ms Bishop said.

"We will get on doing what we do best and that is being a united, tolerant, free society."
