Aussies lap up free Telstra data

The equivalent of five million episodes of Game of Thrones were downloaded during Telstra's free data day.

While some Aussies were out wining and dining, others spent Valentine's Day at home furiously downloading movies during a Telstra data free-for-all.

The telco offered its customers free data all day on Sunday as an apology for last week's mobile outage, which left about 1.5 million people unable to make calls, browse the net or check social media during the blackout.

Sunday was the network's busiest day ever, Telstra said in a statement.

"As soon as midnight ticked over we saw traffic jump up. It reached weekday peak traffic levels by 8am and climbed rapidly from there," group managing director of networks, Mike Wright, said in a statement.

When it was all over, customers had downloaded the equivalent of around 2.3 million movies or 5.1 million episodes of Game of Thrones.

"The high demand meant some customers had slower than normal data speeds on 4G services, but overall the network performed as designed," Mr Wright said on Monday.
