Aussies lose World GP volleyball openers

The Australian women's volleyball team have lost 3-0 to the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan by the same margin in their World Grand Prix debut.

The Australian women's volleyball team has suffered their second 3-nil defeat at the World Grand Prix in Kazakhstan, this time at the hands of the Czech Republic.

But Australia were left to rue missed opportunities, after throwing away a big lead in the third set when the match looked like it could turn in their favour.

The final score resembled the Czech Republic's dominance though as they registered a 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-20) win.

Australia lost their opening match of the Grand Prix, their first ever, to Kazakhstan in three sets on Friday night.

While the scoreline again suggested a fairly one-sided contest, coach Mark Barnard was happy with his team's first outing.

"There was more good than bad, and I wouldn't even say when it was bad, it was bad," he said.

"It's not a long journey for us (the Grand Prix). It's only a couple of weeks, but I really think we can improve as we go along.

"We're all nervous - coaches, players - the whole lot. We'll be better for the experience."

Australia co-captain Rachel Rourke, having played in several of the world's top domestic competitions for several seasons, said there was plenty to be excited about from the Kazakhstan match.

"I definitely think there were some nerves out there. You could see it in some of the girls' faces," Rourke said.

Australia play their final match in Kazakhstan against Croatia on Sunday, before heading to Croatia for three more matches next weekend.
