Aussies out to impress in German triathlon

Australia's top triathletes will be seeking to secure spots in this year's world championships grand final squad when they race in Hamburg on the weekend.

Australia's elite triathletes have one of their last chances to impress national selectors before September's world championship grand final at this weekend's ITU world series race in Hamburg.

A total of 11 Australians, including Olympians Emma Moffatt, Brendan Sexton and Emma Jackson, will all line up for the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run sprint event in Germany.

The race is one of the last before selectors name the elite and under-23 squad for September's final in London, which will offer an automatic berth to next year's Commonwealth Games if the top-ranked Australian male or female can finish in the top eight.

Dual Olympian and 2008 bronze medallist Moffatt will be joined by Jackson, Ashleigh Gentle, Charlotte McShane and Natalie van Coevorden in Saturday's women's race.

Ranked sixth in the world series standings going into the race, Moffatt says Hamburg is one of her favourite locations after victories there in 2009 and 2011.

"I love racing in Hamburg and have had some good results there in the past, so I'd like to keep a good track record," she said.

Felicity Abram, who is ranked 8th in this year's world series, will miss Saturday's race due to a stomach bug which afflicted her in the last round in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Sexton leads a young team of six athletes in the men's event, fresh from his win at last weekend's British Sprint Championships in Liverpool.

"I've had a successful and progressive lead into this weekend but, to be honest, my aim for Hamburg is to continue this progression towards my season's major focuses," Sexton said.

"I'll be racing guys who've been racing at this level, unimpeded, for months and I will be happy to tick off my process targets and be in the mix across the finish."

Joining Sexton will be under-23 world champion Aaron Royle, in what will be his second race after a stint in a Spanish hospital with pneumonia and an abscess on his lung, Cameron Good, Dan Wilson, Peter Kerr and Ryan Bailie.
