Aussies reach Hamilton RU sevens quarters

Australia will play New Zealand in the Hamilton leg of the men's sevens world series following a nail-biting final pool loss to Fiji.

Australia have lost a thrilling final pool match to Fiji at the Hamilton leg of the men's sevens world series but will still contest the quarter-finals.

The Olympic champions held on to beat a young Australian side 26-19 on Saturday, only securing victory after the final hooter when Ben O'Donnell was ankle-tapped as he strode towards what could have been an equalising try.

Earlier wins over Argentina and Wales means Tim Walsh's men still reach the last eight, where they will face unbeaten hosts New Zealand. Fiji earn a more comfortable draw against Canada.

South Africa and the United States were unbeaten, setting up quarter-finals against Samoa and Scotland respectively.

Tries to Lachie Anderson and Maurice Longbottom left Australia trailing Fiji 19-14 at halftime.

Captain Lewis Holland squared the scoreline before Mesulame Kunavula's try proved decisive for the Pacific Island giants.

The first day results mirrored last year's tournament in Hamilton, when Australia won two pool games before bowing to Fiji, a team they haven't beaten in their last 13 meetings.

The Australians went on to finish third while Fiji won the inaugural event at Waikato Stadium.

Holland bagged an important late try in the opening 17-12 win over Argentina.

It was more comfortable in a 26-5 defeat of the Welsh. All of Australia's points came in the first half, including first world series tries to Jeral Skelton and Josh Coward.

Australia were ranked sixth coming into the third leg of the tournament, hoping to unearth some form ahead of next week's defence of the Sydney crown they won last week.
