Another display of disciplined pace bowling has put Australia on top in the second Test against India at the SCG.

James Pattinson (4-43) led the way for Australia as Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus claimed three wickets each to dismiss India for just 191 shortly after tea on day one.

The tourists' captain MS Dhoni top-scored for the out-of-sorts Indians, making 57 not out, while Sachin Tendulkar's quest for 100 international hundreds continues after the superstar was dismissed by 21-year-old Pattinson for 41 before the tea break.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat in sun-soaked conditions on a good-looking pitch, India were immediately in trouble when Gautam Gambhir edged Pattinson to Michael Clarke for a third-ball duck in the first over.

Pattinson went on to add the scalps of VVS Laxman (2) and Virender Sehwag (30) in the morning session while Siddle dismissed Rahul Dravid (5) as the Indians limped to 4-72 at lunch.

The Victorian pair added further wickets in the middle session, Siddle picking up Virat Kohli (23) while Pattinson grabbed the prize wicket of Tendulkar when the Little Master chopped a wide delivery back onto his stumps.

Tasmanian Hilfenhaus (3-51) then claimed two wickets in two balls just before tea, ending a 54-run seventh-wicket stand between Ravichandran Ashwin (20) and Dhoni, with Zaheer Khan offering a simple catch to Ed Cowan on the next delivery.

Hilfenhaus added a third when he had Ishant Sharma caught by Cowan for a duck before Siddle (3-55) wrapped up the innings with his 100th Test wicket when Umesh Yadav (0) nicked a simple chance through to Brad Haddin.
