Aussies star in Ranchi's HIL triumph

Goalkeeper Tyler Lovell was one of five Kookaburras in the Ranchi Rays side that won the Hockey India League final.

Australian goalkeeper Tyler Lovell was the hero as his MS Dhoni-owned Ranchi Rays defeated the Punjab Warriors in a penalty shootout to win the Hockey India League title.

Lovell saved three penalties in the shoot-out after the scores in Sunday's final were tied at 2-2, helping his side prevail 3-2 alongside fellow Kookaburras Daniel Beale, Nick Budgeon, Fergus Kavanagh and Trent Mitton.

Eleven Australians played in the final and the Warriors looked to be cruising to victory when goals from World Cup winnners Kieran Govers and Chris Ciriello opened up a 2-0 lead.

But the Rays fought back through goals from Stanli Minz and Barry Middleton to send the match to a shoot-out.

Matt Gohdes, Tristan White and Jason Wilson helped the Delhi Waveriders beat George Bazeley and Eddie Ockenden's Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the third-place playoff match 2-1.
