The battle to become the Pittsburgh Steelers' punter just got a little easier for Australians Brad Wing and Jordan Berry.
The Steelers have axed a third candidate, former University of Houston punter Richie Leone.
The NFL team brought Leone in to challenge the two Australians for the team's one punting position and announced at the end of its rookie mini-camp on Monday it was down to Wing and Berry.
Melbourne-born Wing, a star at Louisiana State University, held the job last season however was inconsistent - with flashes of brilliance on some plays and monumental errors on others.
Essendon-raised Berry, another big boot who grew up playing Australian rules, was a standout at Eastern Kentucky University before getting the call from the Steelers in April.
The Steelers will go with only one punter when they slash their 90-strong off-season squad down to 53 players on the eve of the 2015/16 season in late August.
