Australian military aircraft could be in Nepal as early as Thursday to evacuate trekkers stranded after a massive earthquake.

A senior Australian Defence officer says Globemaster aircraft are on standby to take aid into Nepal and bring Australians home.

The timing is dependent on getting access to Kathmandu Airport, which is congested due to there being only nine parking spaces for aircraft.
