Aust bag 27 medals at para swim c'ships

Gold medals to Maddison Elliot and Matthew Levy on the last night of the IPC World Championships in Montreal helped boost Australia's final tally to 27.

Teenager Maddison Elliot added another gold to Australia's 27-medal haul on the final night of the IPC World Championships in Montreal.

The 14-year-old para-swimmer touched the wall first in the women's 50m freestyle S8 final on Sunday, a day after beating the world record holder in the 100m final of the same category.

Swimmer Matthew Levy had kicked off the last night of racing with success in the men's 200m individual medley SM7 final.

Despite finishing second, the Sydney swimmer claimed his first individual gold medal after winner Yevheniy Bohodayko of the Ukraine was disqualified.

Matthew Haanappel claimed Australia's final medal of the championship with a bronze in the men's 100m freestyle S6 final.

The victories topped off a successful meet for the 18-member Australian swim team, who bagged 11 gold, four silver, 12 bronze - plus two new world records to Blake Cochrane and Brenden Hall.

Paralympic great Matthew Cowdrey managed five gold medals of his own, including wins in his pet 100m freestyle S9 and 50m freestyle S9 events and the 4x 100m freestyle relay.

Grant Patterson (silver) and Rowan Crothers (gold) also picked up their first international medals.
