Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has cast doubt over whether Australia's tough border protection policies would help solve the crisis involving asylum seekers crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

"I'm very conscious of the fact that the geographic circumstances are very different between Europe and Australia," Ms Bishop told reporters in Berlin.

She said what works in one circumstance may or may not work in another and European governments have to make their own decisions to resolve the issues.
