Aust could be world's mining hub, says Rio

Rio Tinto's CEO says Australia should aim to be the epicentre of global mining.

The chief executive of mining giant Rio Tinto says Australia could become the epicentre of global mining if it had more ambition.

Jean-Sebastien Jacques told the Melbourne Mining Club that Australia must first position itself as the financial centre of mining, which would involve making the corporate tax rate more competitive.

Australia must then become a global centre of mining technology, and the federal government needs to take the lead in developing mining partnerships, he said.
