The Olympic Council of Asia has expressed disappointment that Australia didn't send more athletes to the Asian Winter Games which closed on Sunday.

Australia sent a largely developmental team of 30 athletes to the Games in Sapporo where it was invited as a guest.

It achieved four top five finishes in figure skating (Brendan Kerry and Kailani Craine) and women's moguls (Sophie Ash and Jakarta Anthony) as well as a third place in a cross country skiing event (Casey Wright).

Honorary life vice president of the OCA Wei Jizhong said he hoped to see a bigger Australian contingent at OCA events in future.

"You sent too little athletes here," he said.

"You should have sent more athletes. I think entering the first time you were very careful but next time Australia should send more."

Comment was being sought from the Australian Olympic Committee.

OAC president John Coates has expressed hope that Australia will be able to participate in the summer version of the regional competition in China in 2022.

"Discussions are underway and I believe there would be great interest in the Asian Games amongst our member sports," he told the Sapporo Asian Winter Games Daily News.
