Aust downed by US at water polo World Cup

Australia's woman's water polo team have been beaten 8-6 by the USA at the FINA World Cup in Russia.

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia, Aug 13 AAP - The Australian women's water polo team have suffered an 8-6 loss to USA in their second match at the FINA World Cup in Russia after being unable to pull back from a fast start by the Americans.

USA dominated from the starting whistle, posting two goals in the first two minutes of Wednesday's match, and leaving Australian goalkeeper Kelsey Wakefield fighting to stop the scoreline gap widening.

The Stingers put two goals on the board in the second quarter, but the deficit continued to grow, with USA leading 5-2 at half-time.

After two goals to each side in the third phase, Australia led the way in the final quarter but weren't able to pull even.

London Olympics bronze medallist Rowie Webster put on three of Australia's goals, while Jayde Appel, Bronte Cloenso and Keesja Gofers also scored.

Stingers assistant coach Predrag Mihailovic praised the team's effort, saying they had given 100 per cent.

"Unfortunately our execution was not as effective as we would like," he said.

"There were a few mistakes and we had to play catch up all game."

Australia's next game will be against South Africa at 8.30pm (AEST) on Thursday.
