Aust grab silver at rowing world champs

Australia's lightweight quad scull women's team have snatched silver at world rowing championships.

Australia's lightweight quad scull women's team have snatched silver at world rowing championships in Amsterdam on a tough day for their teammates.

"I don't think it's sunk in yet that we've won the silver medal," Maia Simmonds said.

In windy conditions, Australia missed out on medals in the lightweight men's pair, where the duo of Darryn Purcell and Alister Foot finished 6th and men's single scull, where Perry Ward suffered a similar fate.

Prior to the medal races, Australia qualified for four more finals, with the men's and women's double sculls, women's single scull and lightweight men's coxless four all booking their spot in this weekend's A-Finals.

Expectations are high for the women's double scull partnership of Sally Kehoe and Olympia Aldersey, who broke the world record in their semi-final, powering across the line in a time of 6:37:31.

"It's obviously fantastic to have a world-best time here at the world championships, but we can't rest on our laurels," Aldersey said.

"We've got to now turn our attention to Sunday's finals which will definitely be a great race when you look at the calibre of the crews that have qualified."

Meanwhile, defending single scull champion Kim Crowe will get a chance to go back to back after she booked her spot in the final with a second-placed finish behind CHina's Jingli Duan.
