Aust gun control group calls for caution

Australia's gun law reform organisation has called on the government to prevent the further erosion of gun laws following the mass US shooting.

Gun Control Australia has called on federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan to prevent further erosion of Australia's gun laws.

It come after the United States' deadliest mass shooting in modern history which killed 50 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

The gun law reform organisation says political pressure from the well-financed gun lobby has led to the weakening of state and territory laws since the 1996 National Firearms Agreement.

"We're now in a position where high-powered weapons are being imported under low-powered licenses," GCA chair Samantha Lee said in a statement on Monday.

GCA has condemned the government's move to allow the importation of an Adler level action gun, which has a high-speed shooting capacity, despite a warning about the danger of magazine extensions that are readily available.

"The firearm currently classified as a low-powered hunting rifle has now evolved into a modern firearm that looks and operates like a semi-automatic weapon and is available to 800,000 firearm holders in Australia," Ms Lee said.

The national stockpile of gun and silencers continues to grow, the organisation says.

The National Firearms Agreement is due to be reviewed at COAG in August.
