Former Australian Idol winner Kate DeAraugo has been banned from driving for six months and fined $300 for driving under the influence of drugs.

The 29-year-old former member of Young Divas, who has previously spoken about her battle with substance abuse, pleaded guilty in a Sydney court on Friday to one count of driving under the influence of drugs.

She was stopped for a random breath test in Surry Hills on March 8 and was found to have drugs in her system through an oral fluid test, the court heard.

Her lawyer Tony Chay told the court the incident had been a wake-up call for his client, who was now working to address her demons.

"She has returned home to Bendigo to deal with those issues," he told the court.

He said the entertainer had already felt the negative effects of her actions through media reports.

"Clearly you have something going on in your life to resort to drugs," Magistrate Jane Mottley said in handing down DeAraugo's punishment.

DeAraugo shot to fame after winning the TV talent show Australian Idol in 2005, before joining girl band Young Divas.

Since then DeAraugo has famously lost half her body weight, tried working as a secretary and released a book detailing her fall from grace into drug addiction.
