United States ambassador John Berry has praised Australia's efforts to counter violent extremism and encourage other countries to do the same.

"We will not win unless we convince the hearts and minds of the next generation to choose a better path," Mr Berry told reporters in Canberra at an early celebration for America's Independence Day.

He said the recent summit to come up with ideas on how to combat the radicalisation of young people, which he attended, was an example of Australia's great leadership in the region.
