Australia is moving to build its defence relationship with Chile, with a senior officer just concluding a visit to discuss ties and Pacific region security.

Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin, said his visit to Chile was the most senior to Latin America in recent memory.

Air Marshal Binskin said Australia and Chile made natural partners as like-minded nations with similar military capabilities and shared security interests in the Pacific.

"I have been very impressed by the capability and professionalism of the Chilean Armed Forces. Australia values Chile's commitment to cooperation in the South Pacific," he said in a statement.

"In coming years the Australia-Chile defence relationship will continue to grow at both the strategic and practical levels."
