Aust needs better renewable approach: ENA

Australia's power providers are calling for better, national co-ordination of renewable energy integration into the power system.

The peak body for power suppliers says South Australia's statewide blackout revealed more about "the poisonous nature of our political debate" than it did about the reliability of the energy system.

Energy Networks Association chief executive John Bradley on Tuesday called for a better, nationally co-ordinated approach to renewable energy.

But in doing so - at the opening of the All-Energy Australia conference in Melbourne - Mr Bradley said the blackout, caused by extreme weather damaging more than 23 transmission towers, highlighted existing risks to the grid.

He conceded there were issues with the SA's network but insisted a review into the blackout would come up with "evidence-based" conclusions.

"Until then it would be better that those rushing to judgment or calling for heads to roll should take a breath," Mr Bradley told the conference.

The country's energy ministers will hold an emergency meeting on Friday in the wake of the SA crisis.

Mr Bradley said the transformation of the energy sector was "essential" but he noted "it is fundamentally increasing uncertainty".

South Australia's power system security was being stretched by a loss of synchronous generation, the ENA boss admitted, while calling for ministers to work towards a co-ordinated approach to cleaner energy.

"Patchwork targets and policies across Australia are not leading to a stable, secure energy system," he said in a statement.

"Energy ministers must deliver a national carbon policy for a national energy market."

Energy Networks Association is the peak national body representing gas distribution and electricity transmission and distribution businesses throughout Australia.
