Australia is not considering broadening its fight against Islamic State to Syria, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has indicated the UK could extend its campaign beyond Iraq if a direct threat came from Syria.

Ms Bishop told Sky News while Australia was in ongoing discussions on strategy with coalition partners, it had not received any such request from Syria, nor any other country.

Ms Bishop also welcomed NATO's support for Turkey in its fight against Islamic State.

Turkey, considered a key transit point for Australian foreign fighters, has been wracked by a bloody suicide bombing which killed 32 people and blamed on the extremist group.

The foreign minister acknowledged concerns Ankara could use military might against Kurdish rebels as it battles IS.

But the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, was also a listed terrorist organisation in Australia, she said.

Turkey had Australia's backing in the joint effort to defeat the "barbaric" IS group.

"The focus we have is on defeating Daesh," Ms Bishop said.
