Australia has offered to help Indonesia with the investigation of a plane crash in the country's east.

An Indonesian passenger aircraft crashed in the remote province of Papua with 54 people on board at the weekend.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop made the offer to her Indonesian counterpart and officials are in discussions on the matter.
