Aust Para-snowboarder awake after surgery

Australian Para-snowboarder Matthew Robinson is awake but remains in a critical condition after a racing accident in Spain.

Top Australian Para-snowboarder Matthew Robinson has woken up from an induced coma after suffering critical neck and spinal injuries in a racing accident in Spain.

But his condition has not changed significantly in the past 24 hours, the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) said on Friday.

Robinson crashed at the bottom of the first run of his second race at the IPC Snowboard World Cup finals in La Molina on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old from Melbourne was airlifted to the Parc Tauli Sabadell Hospital in Barcelona where he underwent surgery.

He is now awake and responsive in intensive care, the APC said.

Robinson's parents and fiancee are on their way to Barcelona to arrive early on Saturday.

Members of the Australian Paralympic Team medical staff, as well as the Australian Institute of Sport's Chief Medical Officer Dr David Hughes, are already on site and monitoring Robinson closely.

APC chief executive Jason Hellwig said the organisation is doing everything they can to ensure Robinson and his loved ones receive the support they need.

"Our thoughts and best wishes are with Matthew, his family and his teammates as he continues to fight hard in hospital," he said.

"The Australian Paralympic Committee continues to work very closely with medical staff on the ground in Barcelona, as well as the Australian Embassy in Spain, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the AIS to ensure our response is well coordinated and leaves nothing to chance."

The accident occurred one day after he finished fourth in the first men's first upper limb impairment race for the event.

Robinson is currently leading the IPC Snowboard World Cup rankings in his category.

This year he has competed in three IPC World Cup events and in January won Australia's first Para-snowboard gold medal at a World Cup meet at Copper Mountain in the US.

Para-snowboard will make its debut on the Paralympic program when the Sochi Games open on March 7, although Robinson's classification will not be contested.
