Aust rowing eights face repechages

The Australian eights crews missed direct qualification for their finals at the world rowing titles however the women's quad scull have impressed.

Australia's eights crews have missed chances to advance directly to their finals at the world rowing championships in France.

With the world titles doubling as qualifying for next year's Rio Olympics, the Australian eights were off the pace against the world's best on Monday and must now contest repechage rounds to get through to the medal races in Aiguebelette.

Racing against world champions Great Britain, the Australian men finished last in their six-boat heat, with the Brits taking the honours.

The women's eight, coxed by Sarah Banting, were also up against stiff competition including 2014 silver medallists Canada.

With only two final spots up for grabs from the heat they finished fourth behind Canada and New Zealand.

In total, seven Australian crews qualified for their respective quarters, semis, or finals, while the remaining five must contest repechages.

The women's quad scull of Madeleine Edmunds, Kerry Hore, Jennifer Cleary and Jessica Hall booked a place in their final with an impressive victory.

Silver medallists at the Lucerne World Cup earlier this year, the Australians took the lead at the halfway mark and were not headed.

Australia's double scull crew of Sally Kehoe and Olympia Aldersey needed a win to automatically qualify for their semi-final but Lithuania surged at the line to them and they now face a repechage.

Other rowers to advance include men's double scullers Alexander Belonogoff and James McRae while Australia's reigning para-rowing world champions, Erik Horrie (men's single scull ) and Kathryn Ross and Gavin Bellis (mixed double scull) both won their heats.

Lightweight men's pair Darryn Purcell and Nick Silcox also finished first in their heat, while Tim McDonnell advanced in the lightweight men's single scull repechage.

The lightweight women's quad scull, who won a silver medal at the worlds last year, qualified for the A-final with a second place in their heat.
