Australia is seeking talks with Egypt over a possible pardon for jailed journalist Peter Greste, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi last month raised hopes that Greste and his two colleagues could soon be released when he said a pardon for the three Al-Jazeera journalists was "under study".

Ms Bishop last week spoke with the Egyptian foreign minister to raise Greste's release.

Australia's ambassador in Cairo was also trying to arrange a meeting with justice minister Mahfouz Saber.

"So that we can find out the details of what the president was referring to," Ms Bishop told Sky News.

"If there is an opportunity for there to be a pardon or some kind of clemency, then Peter Greste's lawyers would apply for it."

Greste, Egyptian-Canadian Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Egyptian Mohamed Baher were convicted of supporting the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood, and of spreading false information.

An Egyptian court in June handed down jail terms of between seven and 10 years to the three journalists.
