KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia, Aug 12 AAP - The Australian women's water polo team have opened their FINA World Cup campaign in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, with a thrilling 10-7 win over Hungary.
After opening the scoring within three minutes and creating an early 3-2 lead, the Stingers went on to dominate the bulk of the match before falling behind in the third quarter to trail 7-6.
Unfazed by the deficit, the Australians came back with total force in the final phase, firing four unanswered goals to secure victory.
Stingers captain Bronwen Knox led by example as she notched up three goals, while Victoria's Rowie Webster also put on three.
Coach Greg McFadden said it was great to get the win, and that the team had worked hard to pinpoint Hungary's weaknesses.
"The girls did really well, we had previously had an unofficial game against Hungary where the team struggled, we had a few players battle injury and sickness as well," McFadden said.
"For today we had talked about where Hungary's strengths were and we worked on the areas that they had previously been outplaying us."
Australia next faces the United States at 10pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
