Australia 'a leader' in tobacco control

The WHO's Global Tobacco Epidemic report shows Australia is faring well on implementing measures that reduce smoking rates.

The Cancer Institute of New South Wales says the World Health Organisation's worldwide report on smoking shows Australia is a leader in tobacco control.

 

The Global Tobacco Epidemic report shows Australia is faring well on implementing measures that reduce smoking rates.

 

These include taxing cigarettes, smoke-free public spaces, plain packaging and programs like the national Quitline.

 

But the report shows in 2011, 16 per cent of Australians still smoked.



Professor David Currow, from the Cancer Institute of New South Wales, told Ildi Amon people still need to make the personal decision not to smoke.
