Play has resumed at Edgbaston after 9.3 overs with New Zealand at 1-67, having won the toss and electing to bat against Australia in their Champions Trophy showdown.

The players came off the ground at 11:17am (8:17pm AEST) and returned at 1:08pm (10:08 AEST) resulting in the match being reduced to 46 overs.

Josh Hazlewood took the only wicket to fall when Glenn Maxwell took a smart catch at backward point to dismiss Martin Guptill for 26.

Luke Ronchi is 24 not out, but very fortunate to still be at the crease after he and skipper Kane Williamson (16no) had a mid-pitch mix-up attempting a quick single.

But Ronchi scrambled into the crease after after Matthew Wade made a terrible hash of gathering Mitchell Starc's throw towards the stumps.

Australian selectors opted for the allrounder skills of Moises Henriques over the big-hitting Chris Lynn, John Hastings edged out Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc returned for the first time from a fractured foot.

James Pattinson also missed out with Adam Zampa providing 12th man duties.

New Zealand: M Guptill, L Ronchi, K Williamson (capt), R Taylor, N Broom, J Neesham, C Anderson, M Santner, A Milne, T Southee, T Boult.
